The Jackie Clarke Collection

St Muredach's Cathedral Ballina

Jackie Clarke was a prominent businessman from Ballina. On his death in 2000, it was found that he had a huge private collection of over 100,000 documents, photographs, books, posters etc, which covered more than 400 years of Irish history. The Collection was donated to Mayo County Council in 2005 by his widow Anne and it is the most important private collection now to be in public hands.

The Collection is housed in the old Provincial Bank building in Ballina. This building was acquired by Mayo County Council in 2008 and has been completely renovated.

One of the most important documents to be seen in the museum is an original copy of the 1916 Proclamation of the Republic.
